CHAPTER 5
Grace lowered her head onto the desk.
She was still blushing.
“If you’re a werewolf, where do you live in Fantasia? I’ve never seen a werewolf section in any of
the provinces,” said Russell.
“What?” said Grace. This boy had
embarrassed her, insulted her, and now he was spouting nonsense.
“You know, Fantasia,” said Russell.
“All the creatures live there at some point.”
“No....I don’t know about this ‘Fantasia’ place,” Grace said. “Are you sure you’re entirely sane?”
Russell grinned. “Yes, I’m
sane. So you don’t know about Fantasia,
huh? Well, I guess I’ll just have to
take you there.”
“And what if I don’t want to go there?” Grace said.
“Well then. I suppose you’ll be
missing out on the adventure of your life,”
said Russell. He turned on his
heel, walked out the door, turned around, opened the door, and said, “If you
change your mind, we’re in room number 5.
We’ll only be staying for two days, so you’d better choose
quickly.” He gave her a quick smile, and
walked out again.
Grace thought she might die. She
was confused, a stranger was inviting her to take her on an adventure, and he
knew she was a werewolf. She slowly
stood up, and walked upstairs to her bedroom.
She flopped onto her bed. Grace
decided to eat dinner, and decide if she should take Russell’s invitation. She ate quickly and went to bed.
************
The next morning, Grace woke up and all too soon remembered the previous
day’s adventures. She also remembered
her decision. She despised making
decisions. Grace ran over the choices in
her mind. Either Russell was crazy, or
he was lying, or he was serious. Her
problem was that all of the options could be true.
She lay in her bed and thought for what seemed hours. Then, she remembered that Russell had
parents. Grace had limited knowledge of
parents, not remembering her own, but she did know that adults were generally
truthful. So she decided to ask
Russell’s parents.
Grace realized she had not had breakfast yet. She quickly whipped up some pancakes, ate,
threw on some clothes, and made the short journey to room number 5.
Grace briskly walked up to room number 5, and absent-mindedly wondered
why most of the lights were off. Then
she realized it was 8:00 am, probably not the best time to visit strangers who
had been driving all of the day before.
She sighed and walked back to her shop.
She tinkered until 1:00. She decided that it was about time she payed them a visit, and walked up to
room number 5. When she reached the
door, she took a deep breath, and knocked.
Rob, Russell’s dad, answered. He
looked surprised to see her.
“Hello, how can I help you?” he asked.
“Well.....I.....um......” Grace stuttered. Calm
down! she told herself. She took
another deep breath, and began again.
“Sorry to bother you, but Russell told me something very convincing,
and.....well.....not saying he’s a liar, but I really need to know if it’s true
or not,” she said.
Rob stood in the doorway with a thoughtful look on his face. Then he stepped into the hall and closed the
door.
“Okay,” he said. “What did he
say?”
“Um.....it might sound silly, but he said something about a different
world called Fantasia, and he said something about going there, and......”
Grace stopped. Rob’s eyes had widened,
and he quickly opened the door to the room again and pulled her inside. He stuck his head out into the hall, looked
around cautiously, and closed the door.
“What did he tell you?” Rob asked Grace urgently.
“Nothing important!” she said quickly.
“Just something about a place called Fantasia, and monsters living
there, and a werewolf province, and......uh....” Rob’s eyes had grown wider.
“Wait.....he was right!” Rob exclaimed.
“Huh?” said Grace. “What do you
mean?”
“Have you ever been to Fantas.....oh, right. Well.
Yes, Russell was telling the truth,” Rob said. “There is a place called Fantasia, and
monsters are real, and it appears that you are a monster, too. Just like me and Russell.”
“What do you mean?” said Grace slowly, as she reached into her back
pocket. She always carried around a homemade
taser, just in case, and it seemed she might have to use it.
“I’ll tell you in a minute. Here,
come in and sit down. I have a feeling
we’re going to have to talk for a while!”
Rob chuckled.
They walked through a short hallway into an adjoined living room and
dining room. Rob sat down on the couch
and invited Grace to sit on the love seat.
She did, and that decision changed her life.
*************
“So Russell told you about Fantasia?” Rob asked.
“Well, no.” said Grace. She had
withdrawn her hand from her pocket, but still kept it close to her side.
“Okay. Well, everything I’m about
to say will sound like a bunch of nonsense, but you have to believe me.” said
Rob. Grace nodded, still unsure but
ready to listen.
“A long time ago, nobody knows how, a world separate from Earth was
created. A world no one can reach
through space, but can be reached by portals.
This world was similar to ours, but only some strange people knew of it
and could travel to it. These people
were mythical creatures. Like, the stuff in the myths and
legends. Some of them were good, some of them were bad. They married,
reproduced, and populated the world unknown to normal people. However, some live in the human world and
intermarried. Their creature kids
intermarried, and soon many creatures lived on Earth.
“These creatures were different from the others, looking more human then
those who lived only in the other world, which was named Fantasia. Only when observed by another creature can
these human-creatures be distinguished from humans. They obtained the ability to mask their
creature-ness even when in Fantasia, unlike full-blooded creatures, who assume
their true form immediately when they enter Fantasia.
“You are unique. From what I can
tell, you are a werewolf, but I’m guessing that you are more human than
werewolf. Otherwise I could see you very
clearly as a werewolf. So, if you want
to go to Fantasia, you’re welcome to come with us.” Rob took a deep breath, settled back into his
chair, and looked at Grace.
“Do you have any parents?” he asked.
Grace blushed.
“I’ve never seen them and I have no memory of them, but I know that I do
have parents somewhere.” she said. “I
was raised and schooled by some of the people in Paransville, but I’ve always
been independent.”
“Well, that explains why you don’t know about Fantasia. It’s a creature's heritage, and is passed from
generation to generation.” Rob said.
Grace was almost convinced. She
just needed more proof. After all, why
would an adult and a kid try to convince a total stranger of something unless
they were telling the truth? “Alright,”
she said. “Can you get me there?”
Rob grinned. “Now we’re getting
somewhere!” He stood up and walked to
one of the doors adjoining the living room.
“Follow me, and I’ll show you.” he said.
Grace got up and walked into the room behind the door. Her hand was no longer near her pocket.
