Chapter 9: Important Information

Chapter 9.  I've got some questions for you after you read it.

                                                                     CHAPTER 9
Far from Grace and Russell, in the Palace Nynal, a great wolf sat in the throne room.  He was larger than the sentries at the Greek Center, much larger.  His muscles bulged under his rich cape, causing his armor to pinch his skin.  He smiled, a toothy smile, and daintily picked a rat brain out of the bowl beside him.  He flicked it into his mouth.
Suddenly, the doors at the end of the room flew open.  “SIR!!!” shouted a small wolf, running across the room.  “Sir, you’ll never guess what happened!!  You need to—"  He stopped and gulped, realizing his entry was louder than he had meant it to be.
The great wolf sighed and rose from his chair with his hands clasped behind his back to meet the small wolf, who now stood in the middle of the room.  “Qinn, how many times do I have to tell you I’m not to be disturbed when I am eating?” he asked, drawing his razor sharp claw across Qinn’s throat.  The smaller wolf swallowed.  “And, for your sake, I hope you knock next time.  There could be some......unpleasant consequences if you didn’t, hmm?”  Qinn nodded and swallowed again.  “Now, what was it you were going to tell me that was so urgent?” asked the great wolf.  He stepped back and removed his claw from Qinn’s throat.
He gulped, cleared his throat, and stood at attention.  “Sir!  Great Gryzo, sir!  Important information to report, sir!  The seer says she has found the girl, sir!  She requests an audience with you immediately.  Sir!”
The great wolf, Gryzo, backed up a step.  “At ease, Qinn.  You say she has found the girl?  Are you sure?”
Qinn nodded.  “Yes sir, she said she’s sure this time.  She said she’d be willing to bet her carreer as a seer on it.”  He giggled.  “Haha, that rhymes, carreer and seer, get it sir?”
Gryzo sighed again.  “Yes Qinn, I get it.  Come.  Let’s go see if our seer is right.  If she isn’t, this may mean a little walk to the torchure chamber, eh?”
Qinn laughed uncertainly.  “Haha, erm, yes, sir.  The torchure chamber it is for her!”
                                       ****************
They walked through some halls and up and down several sets of stairs.  Finally, they came to a very small door.  Gryzo opened it, and ducked through the doorway.  Qinn followed.
The room was small, cramped, and very crouded.  It was cluttered with the instruments of a seer hanging on the walls and laying on tables.  A phenoix screached at them from a perch in a corner.  In the far end of the room, a small old woman sat on a rug, eyes closed and hands folded in her lap.  Gryzo crossed the room to her.  Qinn, cowering behind him, advanced as well.  The seer spoke.
“You seek word of the girl.”  It was not a question.
    “Yes?” said Gryzo eagerly.
    “She has entered Fantasia.”
    “Where is she?”
“That is the problem.....I have not found her.”
    “What?” roared Gryzo.
The woman held up her hand.  “Peace,” she said, standing up and opening her eyes.  They were completely violet, with no pupil or iris.  Qinn shuddered.  The seer hobbled over to a table covered in shells, beads, string, and other instruments.
“Come.”  She beckoned Gryzo to where she stood.  He looked at Qinn.  “You may leave now.”  Qinn left, bumping his head on the doorframe.  He looked back at Gryzo with a wince, and closed the door behind him.  As soon as the door was closed, he let out the squeal of pain he had been holding in and ran away.
Gryzo turned back to the seer.  “Excuse him, he’s not the best of my soldiers.  Now, about the girl?”
The seer nodded to the table.  “Observe.”  She picked up a small wolf figurine.  “This is the girl,” she said.  She closed her eyes, her hand hovering over the table.  She picked up a snake.  “This is her companion,” she said.  “They are........”  She screwed up her face in concentration, eyes still closed.  “I smell food.  Greek food.  They are near Greek food,” she said, opening her eyes with a look of triumph.
“That’s it?” said Gryzo.  He was getting angry.  “That’s all you have for me?  I should—"
“Patience, oh Great Wolf,” said the woman.  “You have let your emotions take control of your mind and you’re not leaving room to think.  Think like the girl herself.  You are new in Fantasia.  You have a Greek creature friend, who wants to take you to see Fantasia in a glance.”    “Noinim!!” exclaimed Gryzo.  “They’re in Noinim!!  Hmm, Greek food........where in Noinim serves Greek--Aha!!!  The Greek Center!!  That’s where they are.”
The seer smiled.  “So it would seem.  You might want to search for her.”

Gryzo turned to go.  “Yes, I should.  But,” he added in a more menacing tone.  “If my soldiers tell me she is not there, we will search the whole city.  If we cannot find her, you will be dead within the hour.  You’d better hope you’re right.”  He left the room without closing the door.  The woman waved to her pheonix, who flew off its pearch and closed the door with its beak.  Then she backed up to her rug, sat down, and closed her eyes once more.

Okay, ENTER SCENE TWIST!!!!!  We now go to Gryzo, the antagonist.  Is he menacing?  Is he a good villain?  Should I keep Quinn in the scene (I don't have him in any other chapter so far)?  Is the seer mystical and seer-ish?  Tell me what you think!
We'll switch back to Grace soon, don't worry.
Peace out, peeps!

  1. You need to keep Quinn in the story! You ought to have him constantly messing Gryzo's plans up... But if that's the case, you need to find a reason that Gryzo doesn't "exterminate" him immediately (e.g. they're related)... it could get pretty hilarious :)
