CHAPTER 14
Grace wiggled around in her chair.
She had been sitting for at least two hours, she figured. After they had returned to the room,
Russell, Aunna and she were stuck in their seats while a heated argument about
what was to happen with Grace went on.
The adults—Grace laughed inwardly, she was calling the creatures in the room
adults now—had been debating over whether they should follow Zina’s “advice.”
Grace sighed. Well, I’m definitely
the princess. We all heard it from
the mouth of a seer. But I never thought
that being a princess involved sitting here listening to people argue.
When will they ever stop? she thought. Then she had an idea.
“I
still think that we should take her to my people,” said Serin. “We have knowledge in our libraries
that she would benefit from.”
“Hey
guys, can you listen to me for a minute?” Grace asked. Everyone ignored her.
“No,
we should follow Zina’s advice.
She is a Seeker, anyway, and besides—"
“Guys!!” Everyone looked at her. “Can you please listen?”
“Go
ahead, dear,” said Aquafina.
“Well, I’m the princess, right?”
A few creatures nodded.
“And since my parents are in Gryzo’s prison, then I’m the ruler for now,
right?” More creatures nodded,
slower this time. “Then I can tell
you what to do. Okay, I hereby
order you to take me to Eltobe, or whatever. Zina is a Seeker.
And somehow, I know that we should do what she says. I have this feeling that if we don’t,
something will go terribly wrong.
I mean some of us will die, most definately me.”
Everyone looked at Grace without blinking. She embarassedly shrank into her seat, regretting her
decision to talk at all. Then Ash
burst out laughing, and so did Oak.
Grace blinked.
“Sorry, hahahahah,” Ash said, wiping his eyes, “but that’s just
so....brilliant!!! I mean, that
was perfectly thought out.
Hahahahaha!! Ahem. She’s right, you know. Heehee!!”
“Yep, she is. Well, if no
one else will, I vote for Grace to find Eltobe.” Oak put up a hand.
“Anyone with me?”
Christy raised her hand.
“Come on guys,” she urged.
“You have to obey even if you don’t want to.”
Some
hands shot up, others looked as if they were dragged, but in the end, all were
in favor.
“Alright,” said Christy, “Eltor, are you willing to take Grace to your
brother?”
“I
am.” Eltor smiled at Grace. “I think you will like him. He will like your sharp mind and
wit. Come, it will not take long
to get there. Rhynelle, if you
will help.....?”
“Sure thing!!” Rhynelle the
witch jumped up out of her seat.
“This will be a little bit unexpected, and maybe frightning.”
“I
think I’m ready for anything, now,” Grace said.
“Okay, here goes,” said Rhynelle.
Suddenly, a whirling oval of black, blue, and purple sparkles opened up
in fron of her. Grace jumped back. “Told you it would be unexpected.” Rhynelle’s eyes twinkled as she
spoke. “Portals are my specialty. So is healing. But you’ll learn all about that at
Eltobe’s. Alright, this will take
you to his cabin. Just jump on
in. Oh, and it’s best if you close
your eyes.”
Grace stayed where she was.
“I’ll go first,” said Eldor.
“To show you it’s safe.” He
stepped through the portal, there was a flash of light and then—he was gone.
Everyone looked at Grace expectantly. “Can Russell and Aunna go with me?” she asked in a small
voice.
“Aunna can, and Russ, you go too.
I’ll contact your dad later.”
Christy waved them on.
“Well? Go on in!”
“We’ll come after you,” Russell told her. “I’ve been in one of these before. Just run if you’re scared.”
Grace nodded. Then she took
a deep breath, and ran straight at the portal. Searing light showed turned her eyelids red and—
She
tumbled onto a mossy patch in the middle of an ancient looking forest. “You’d better move, dear,” Eldor
said. He was sitting on a lichen covered log. Grace
scrambled out of the way just in time, as Russell landed right where she had
and Aunna came out straight after.
Aunna caught herself just in time and fluttered to safety. Immediately after Aunna exited the
portal, it vanished in a spectacular and quite loud display of fireworks.
Eldor sniffed. “Hmph! Rhynelle always was the one with a
dramatic flair. One day it’ll get
her in trouble. Okay, follow
me.” He heaved himself off the log
and tramped away into the woods.
Grace looked at Russell, who shrugged. “Ladies first?
She stuck out her tounge and followed after Eldor.
They
had only been walking for about three minutes when Eldor stopped. “Well!! Here we are.
I’m going to bring you to the house, introduce you, and then leave.
“Also,” he added, “you might find my brother a bit......strange. Just ignore it. He is one of the wisest wizards of this
age.”
He
resumed walking. It was then that
Grace noticed the cabin standing before them. If you could call it a cabin, that is. It blended in with the forest so well,
she hardly saw it when she was looking.
Moss and vines grew on it, and it appeared to be made of stone, although
there seemed to be many trees sprouting from the sides. Eldor walked up to a resemblance of a
door on one of its sides and knocked.
“Eh? Who’s there?” a voice
said from inside. “Hang on, let me
find the door.” Grace heard a
crash. And then another. And another. “Flippin’ peaches and bloomin’ cream!!! Infernal flippin’ house, can't find
flippin’ anything because it all flippin’ looks the flippin’ same!!!!!” Someone fumbled at the doorknob. “Ah, here we are.” The door opened.
